The room is fairly nice, all things considered. There are several chairs, a porta-cot set up discreetly against one wall for visitors that for one reason or another are reluctant to leave, and it's clear that whoever designed this particular private room in the first place intended to make it seem as warm and welcoming as possible.
Of course, given that it's a hospital, there's really only so much that can be done.
Currently, the hospital bed is tilted upwards at an angle, with the evident intention of making the patient comfortable. It seems to be working, at least a little, because Gabriel Tam is asleep.

She wants to know he's still there.)
But she stays still, now that she's by the bed, with her hands clasped tightly behind her back, staring still down. Looking perfectly ready to stand there for hours, until he wakes up.

Date: 2007-08-03 06:54 am (UTC)Gabriel mumbles something else, and then comes awake with a small, reflexive jerk.
It takes a moment for him to truly recognize her -- or perhaps to believe that she's actually there.
"... Mary?"
His voice is rougher, too, harsh and strained, but it's unmistakably his.
"What are you doing here?"

Date: 2007-08-03 06:59 am (UTC)Mary's face is tightly pinched, and her voice has more than a hint of accusation in it; what right has he got to get himself hurt now? She'd thought he, at least, could take care of himself.

Date: 2007-08-03 07:04 am (UTC)"Well, maybe a little."
Perhaps incredibly, he's smiling.

Date: 2007-08-03 07:26 am (UTC)She's silent for a long moment - and then, although she retains enough self-awareness to hold her voice back from being a shout, she lets loose.
"You have scars all on your face - there is something in your nose - it is not a little! You have been hurt badly. You could have been dead and you are very lucky that Galadan was there so it was not worse - and if it had been and you had not been all right I should not ever have forgiven you!"

Date: 2007-08-05 04:12 am (UTC)Galadan's voice is very quiet.
"Harangue him when he's well."
no subject
Date: 2007-08-05 04:19 am (UTC)It may well be meant for both of them. He continues,
"And so am I. Or I will be, and that's close enough to the same thing to stand for it."
no subject
Date: 2007-08-05 04:30 am (UTC)And mutters, "I will harangue him then, too."
But she sounds, looks, a little reassured - if only because they both seem confident that it's a 'when' and a 'will be', and she believes them when they say things like that. Both of them.

Date: 2007-08-05 04:42 am (UTC)"I hope you do not object should I choose to join you in that."

Date: 2007-08-05 04:47 am (UTC)"I'm never going to hear the end of this, am I?"
no subject
Date: 2007-08-05 04:52 am (UTC)Admittedly, 'some people' would probably get just as much of a tongue-lashing, but that's besides the point; the point is that this is not a habit that he is allowed to get into. At all.

Date: 2007-08-05 05:06 am (UTC)Galadan means this wholeheartedly.
He has quite a few tapes that he intends to give to Mr U to go over, in the meantime.
The creature's scent was far too wide-ranging to belong to a corpse.
And, of course, there is that flickering light to consider, as well.
Galadan will not forget it.

Date: 2007-08-05 05:25 am (UTC)He lowers his arm from his eyes, wincing slightly as the movement strains his broken ribs and torn chest. Despite that, he extends a hand to Mary.
"I'm sorry that I worried you."

Date: 2007-08-05 05:39 am (UTC)"If it had been worse," she repeats, her eyes scrunching shut for a moment before they open again, "I should not have forgiven you."

Date: 2007-08-05 05:44 am (UTC)Galadan's voice is very, very dry.

Date: 2007-08-05 06:11 am (UTC)He shifts just enough to bring his other hand up as well, covering their linked ones with it in a gesture of reassurance.
"But it wasn't worse. And I'm getting better. Besides, now that both my heads of security are aware of ... certain complications... I don't anticipate any other problems."
A beat, and then more gently,
"It really is all right, Mary."

Date: 2007-08-05 06:16 am (UTC)There is not much that is all right, right now. This particular thing could have been worse - it could have been much worse - but that does not make it all right at all.

Date: 2007-08-05 06:24 am (UTC)Gabriel has not heard the last of Galadan being kept ignorant of certain pertinent information, either.

Date: 2007-08-05 06:31 am (UTC)Gabriel holds her glance with his own.
"I'll ask you to believe that, if you can."
no subject
Date: 2007-08-05 06:42 am (UTC)It's not a question of belief at this point, once she's heard it as a statement from people she trusts.
"That does not make it better now that you are ill. And I do not know how long it will be, or what will be happening - and I will have to go home and not know and it will be awful."
no subject
Date: 2007-08-05 06:53 am (UTC)"I shall do what I may to keep you informed, Mary. You need have little fear on that score."

Date: 2007-08-05 07:08 am (UTC)She says it almost reluctantly; it seems she's always dependent on other people for news, these days. She wants to be able to do something by herself.
To Galadan: "You will not always be there."
no subject
Date: 2007-08-05 07:09 am (UTC)"No. Though I do visit often enough."
In his opinion, at the least.

Date: 2007-08-05 11:48 pm (UTC)This may be a touch overly optimistic, but he's determined all the same.
